Fishing at Hillend Loch
Bank Fishing | Boat Fishing | Disabled Angling | Permits & Prices
Bank Fishing
There is approximately 5 miles of scenic bank fishing available at the loch with good wading in most areas. An area of the North East shore is reserved for full members only.
Fly-Fishing, Bait Fishing and Spinning is allowed.
Boat Fishing
There are six boats available for hire to Fly Rod Anglers only on Hillend. These can be hired with a 54lb thrust electric outboard with battery supplied.
There are many drifts on the loch with the most popular being, Spiers Island to Shiels Burn, Spiers Island to The Mound, Woodside to Boathouse Bay, Big Moss to Eastercroft Bay, and The Cliffs to Braco Burn.
No anchoring is allowed so a drogue is advisable. Three people are allowed on each boat with only two fishing. Life Jackets are compulsory and are supplied. Most lures will catch trout at Hillend in the early season with Black Fritz and Black Tadpole being the favoured patterns.
Dry lines are recommended, as the loch is only an average depth of 7 feet.
In the months of June and July the Great Red Sedge appears on the loch and becomes a major source of food for the trout, therefore all Sedge patterns i.e. Deer Hair Sedge, G&H Sedge and Muddlers do extremely well.
Disabled Angling
Along the south shore of the loch runs a tarmacadam walkway which provides access for wheelchairs from the Disabled Car Park to a large area of the lochside and custom built Fishing Stages.
A Wheelyboat is also available for wheelchair users. Seven days notice must be given and the boat is supplied with an engine and Boatman. This is booked on a 4-hour basis.
